Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ‘I know why.’

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, ‘People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?’ The Six-year-old continued, ‘Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.’

It can be fascinating to observe the physical development of various breeds throught the years. By comparing what we see today with photographs of the same breeds taken many years ago, changes over time can be quite notable. For example, the practice of selective breeding for aesthetic purposes has increased the size of the bulldog’s head. This change in physical appearance can, unfortunately, result in health problems. For the bulldog, the modification of the head has increased the probability of problems with both breathing and giving birth.

In the first photo below you can see a thinner, smaller headed and longer legged bulldog – characteristics making him closer to the look of his ancestors who were originally bred for the “sport” of bull baiting.

Is your pooch pudgy?

How can you tell if your dog is overweight? There are some very basic observations you can make. When standing over your dog do you see an hourglass shape? If so, then he probably doesn’t have a weight problem. However, if you see his sides protruding, then it’s likely that your dog needs to lose some weight. You can also run your hand over your dog’s ribs. If you can feel them easily under a thin layer of skin and fat, then he is probably okay. If not, then some changes are in order.

It’s always best to take your dog to your veterinarian before making any significant changes to his diet. Consult with the vet so that you can make sure that your diet plan will still include nutrients the dog may need.

One thing is certain: table scraps and high calorie treats must be eliminated. Taking your dog for daily walks and providing regular play and exercise will help both you and your dog. Swapping high calorie goodies for lower calorie treats isn’t hard to do. A few healthy snacks include carrots, apples, green beans, cottage cheese and broccoli. And yes, in most cases, your dog will eagerly devour them.

Adult dogs, like adult humans, don’t lose weight easily or quickly. When done properly, the weight loss will be gradual.

For puppies, it is essential that you be aware of your pup’s food intake. We all know how hard it is to resist those puppy dog eyes, but, in the long term, it’s one of the best things you can do for your pooch. Experts say that puppies should be fed only dog food that is formulated specifically for puppies, four times a day for approximately three months.Then reduce feedings to three times a day for the next three months. After six months switch to twice a day and then one daily feeding when he is one year old. At that time you should switch to adult dog food, and then monitor his weight on a regular basis.

Dogs who are at the proper weight are happier and more energetic. Human beings are certainly no different. Sometimes we simply fail to pay attention or don’t realize how much impact that our decisions about what we feed out dogs has on their overall health and longevity.

Small dogs were originally bred to be the companions of royalty. Their sole purpose was to bring their owners companionship, loyalty, and amusement. The types of small dogs that comprise what is now known as the Toy Group were genetically bred to not only be tiny, but to seek companionship from humans as well. The same qualities that made the small dogs a favorite of royals also make them a favorite of Americans today. In fact, according to American Kennel Club registration statistics, since 2000 four of the top ten most popular breeds in the United States have been small dogs.

Despite their rapid increase in popularity, many toy breeds are unknown to most Americans. Following is a list of six types of small dogs in the Toy Group and some information about their history and temperament.

1. Pug

Pug History

The Pug originated in China around 400 BC. and became popular in Europe around 1027 when Prince William II of England, a long time fan of Pugs, became King of England.

Pug Characteristics

The breed is known for having a big personality in a little body and for being even tempered, playful, and loving. The Pug’s reason for living is to be near his family and his sturdiness makes him one of the few Toy breeds that are suitable for families with young children. Pugs are comfortable in apartments but can adapt easily to all situations. Pugs shed, but their short coats requires little grooming.

2. Maltese

Maltese History

The Maltese breed was also a favorite of royalty, particularly in Malta. According to the AKC, the gentle, white dogs became known as “Ye ancient dogge of Malta”. Now these small dogs are just referred to as “Maltese”.

Maltese Characteristics

Maltese’s are calm, entertaining, and generally great terrific family dogs. They mature at about 4-7 pounds and they require daily brushing to keep their fine coats from becoming matted.

3. Toy Fox Terrier

The American Toy Fox Terrier (TFT) Association states that “The Toy Fox Terrier is truly a Toy and a Terrier, and both have influenced his personality and character. ”

While most terriers were bred in England the TFT was bred in the United States by enthusiasts that crossed the Smooth Coated Fox Terrier with various Toys including Chihuahua’s, Min Pin’s, and Italian Greyhounds.

Toy Fox Characteristics

The Toy Fox Terrier possesses tremendous life-long energy and an acute sense of hearing; characteristics that make him a great watch dog. Like all Toys, the TFT is fiercely loyal to his family. TFT’s mature between 7-9 pounds, require little grooming, and are generally easier to potty train than most Toys.

4. Havanese

Havanese History

The Havanese is the national dog of Cuba and the county’s only native breed. The combination of the Havanese’s study build and it’s gentle but playful personality make it a great companion for children.

Havanese Characteristics

The breed requires slightly more exercise than most Toys and its non-shedding coat, while great for allergy sufferers, needs to be regularly groomed.

5. Brussels Griffon

Brussels Griffon History

The Brussels Griffon is one of the few Toys breeds that grew up with a working class history. Originally the breed was developed by crossing Pugs with sable colored Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. This crossing resulted in two distinct types of coat: rough and smooth. The dog’s sturdiness and affectionate temperament made them great companions for coachmen who used them as ratters in Belgian stables.

Brussels Griffon Characteristics

The Brussels Griffon is super-intelligent and sensitive but can be self-conscious and shy around strangers. Interestingly, a Brussels Griffon was featured in the 1997 hit movie, As Good As it Gets, starring Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt.

6. Pomeranian

Pomeranian History

The American Kennel Club’s web site indicates that “The breed’s name originally came from the historical region of Pomerania (now present day Germany and Poland). Originally weighing nearly 30 pounds, the dog served as an able herder of sheep in its larger form. They were not well known until 1870, when the Kennel Club (England) recognized the so-called Spitz dog. In 1888, Queen Victoria fell in love with a Pomeranian in Florence, Italy, and brought the specimen back to England, influencing its popularity dramatically.”

Pomeranian Characteristics

The Pomeranian is now a showy and animated little dog having been bred down to Toy size over the last century. An average adult Pomeranian weighs about 7 pounds. The breed does not require a lot of exercise but does require regular grooming to keep his coat from matting.

The best thing about Twitter is that you can do a quick search to find like-minded people. Teachers, writers, photographers, celebrities, Susan Boyle lovers, all are tweeting away and just waiting to have another follower. Oh yeah that’s the other thing. On Twitter you get to follow and be followed. Its great fun to see how many people you can woo in 140-characters or less.

Of course I did my usual search for dog lovers and was not disappointed. A long list of dog lovers came up, some promoting businesses and services and some just promoting their dog. That question is probably not foremost in your thoughts when you bring a new puppy into your life. That adorable little face, those huge soulful eyes, and that cute wiggle when he walks are what come to mind when thinking about your new pup. But gradually, as your puppy gets older and perhaps a bit destructive, you may find yourself wishing that he would grow out of some of those youthful traits and begin acting more like an adult dog.  By the time he’s chewed your third pair of shoes you will probably begin to wonder…

Although there are some similarities between early development stages of puppies and human babies, the process is considerably quicker for canines.

Newborn puppies go through many changes during their first three weeks .  They open their eyes, take their first steps, and begin to act like a tiny dog. During this early stage they are not really aware of the world beyond  ”mom”  and siblings.

Somewhere between the third and fourth week your puppy’s senses of sight, smell, and hearing rapidly develop. All of a sudden he’ll discover that there is more to his world than just his canine family. His relationship with his new human family begins to take shape. This is a critical time for the development of your puppy’s personality and behavioral traits. Take care to avoid stressful or traumatic experiences as they may significantly influence how your dog will behave as an adult.

Your puppy will begin learning proper pack “etiquette” during the fifth through seventh weeks. If he begins to bite inappropriately or play too rough, his mother will correct him. These early lessons provide some of the social skills he will need as he interacts with humans and other dogs.

For the first three months of his life your puppy will experience many new things. Whenever possible, try to make these learning experiences positive. In doing so you are much more likely to avoid behavioral problems as he enters adulthood.

After three months or so your puppy enters a “toddler” stage of development. He gains more independence and tries to explore his world as he sees fit, not at the prompting of his mother or his human family. Shoes, furniture, books, and just about anything within reach will fascinate him. He will also learn what they taste like as he begins teething. This is a good time to begin very basic obedience training and establish your role as pack leader.

Your puppy will reach adolescence at around six to eight months, well on his way toward adulthood. Although the transition from adolescent to adult varies, depending upon the breed (or mix of breeds), you can be pretty sure that he has reached adulthood by the time his second birthday rolls around.

That’s when a puppy is fully grown.

Mutts make the best dogs!

Many people think a pure bred dog is going to have a certain personality, then they are shocked when the dog doesn’t act exactly as expected. The truth of the matter is that each dog, mixed breed or pedigree, will have it’s own unique personality and character attributes (just like people). There are so many great reasons to choose a mixed breed dog and this article covers 4 of the best reasons we’ve identified.

1. Mutts are more even-tempered. While it is possible for mixed breed dogs to be very energetic or very laid back they tend toward more moderate temperaments. Their behavior is typically more moderate because they were not bred to have specific characteristics. The behaviors required to achieve the tasks that certain dogs were bred for are not necessarily middle-of-the-road behaviors. Extreme personality traits in mixed breed dogs are often products of the dog’s environment and upbringing and are not inborn characteristics as seen in pure bred dogs. Mixed breed dogs also tend to be a little more flexible to change than pure bred dogs. Some suggest they are not as programmed as their pure bred counterparts and therefore adjust more quickly to change.

2. Mutts have good genetic diversity. Because their genes are usually unrelated the chances of both parents of a mixed breed dog carrying the same defective genes are low. Often the worst diseases or health problems in dogs are passed along through the pairing of the same defective genes. Mixed breed dogs are often healthier because when left up to nature dogs tend to be moderately sized with more natural builds. This happens when cross breeding occurs over time because this is how dogs are designed to be. When people begin breeding they tend to go to extremes from a 3 pound Chihuahua to a 150 pound Great Dane. Other breed specific traits like the short snouts of Pugs, the barrel chest of a Bulldog or the large folds of skin of a Sharpei are actually abnormalities that can cause additional health problems over the life of the dog.

3. Millions of mutts are euthanized each year. Mixed breed dogs are often abandoned or neglected for their pure bred counterparts because they are not perceived as valuable by some. They are often passed over for adoption and end up in the gas chamber simply because they do not appear as fashionable or trendy as the expensive, pure bred, trend dog of the moment.

4. Mixed breed dogs are less expensive. The average price of a pure bred dog is around $800 if you agree to spay or neuter him and around $1,500 if you do not. While many people are more than willing to pay a significant sum of money for their ideal dog, it is completely unnecessary. Mixed breed dogs can be adopted for free from a neighbor or for around $150 from a rescue organization. The adoption fee from a rescue group is nominal and goes towards Veterinary care expenses. Dogs adopted from reputable groups come with all of their shots and are spayed or neutered and ready to go.
